the days of Polaroid I used to enjoy playing with emulsion lifts and

and then further manipulate the image.

In this case the photograph is of skulls of the
victims of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, which I took during a recent visit. After transfering the photo to the aluminium plate and carefully removing the photograph's paper substrate, I am
starting to investigate how the new surface responds to marks/drawing using
pencil and chalk pastel. This is my very first attempt and its early days but I think that
eventually I may be able to do something interesting with it. The next phase will be to see how well it responds to using colour, maybe Copic marking pens or a water colour wash. Will keep you posted...

The Tsukiji Seafood Market located near Ginza in central Tokyo, is the largest
wholesale fish and seafood market on the planet, moving an estimated 2400 tons
of seafood every day, so naturally a visit was in order. It has become famous
for its 5am Tuna auction where the prized maguro
can sell for more than US$10,000 each but because of its popularity with
tourists, the auction is restricted to two shifts of a 120 visitors who watch
the auction from a gallery. It’s first come first served and the line to be
part of the spectator group starts as early as 4am. Bugger that… we decided to
sleep in and after a leisurely breakfast made our trip across town to the
market at a much more respectable hour, arriving just before the ‘Seafood
Intermediate Wholesalers Area’ opened to the public at 9am.
The market is divided into an inner and outer market. Tourists are encouraged
to visit the outer market, which consists of a few blocks of small retail shops
and restaurants crowded along narrow lanes. Here you can find all sorts of food
related goods, knives and fresh seafood and produce for sale in smaller (than
wholesale) portions. A cursory inspection of this section indicated that things
would be a lot more interesting at the inner market, which apart from the
aforementioned wholesalers area is closed off to the public.

So, with a society so seafood crazy I was expecting to find lots to see and
photograph in the worlds biggest fish market. Even at this relatively late hour
in the morning, the market area was a frenetic hive of activity. Boxes upon
Styrofoam boxes are laid out, containing some of the most bizarre looking sea
creatures that I have ever seen outside of National Geographic documentaries. There
is some evidence that as the world’s fish stocks are slowly being depleted
fishermen are starting to harvest deeper seas and species that were previously
ignored are now being seen as a food source. To my uneducated eye, some of the
weird creatures packed on ice definitely seemed to corroborate this.

Even if you’re not interested in fish, Tsukiji Market is a fascinating place to
visit. It’s a working market and it is quite easy to get caught up in watching
the preparation, buying and selling of all the produce. There’s lots more than
just fish to see and I was quite happy to wander around for a couple of hours
snapping away with my iPhone until the urge for coffee and breakfast overcame
me. If you get the chance to visit, go! For more information about the market
and how to get there, click on the market’s official website link here
Given
my interest in military history and memorabilia it was only natural that my
trip to Japan would include a visit to the controversial Yushukan,
a military museum established in 1882 and dedicated to Japan’s war dead.
Located within the grounds of the Yasukuni Jinja shrine, I planned to visit on
a Sunday to take advantage of the flea market that was also held within the
temple complex.

When we arrived, just before lunch, the shrine was already
filling up with people and it was obvious that something else was happening.
Coincidentally, we had arrived on the first day of the annual Mitama Matsuri festival and there would be no flea market scavenging today, so
after spending a few hours exploring the museum and contemplating it’s
revisionist version of Japanese war history we ventured back out onto the
grounds of Yasakuni to check out the spectacle.

It's Sunday and I've been back from Bangladesh for almost a fortnight and I've got a pile of work to catch up on. So, what do I do? Procrastinate... it's what I do best. I decide to go through my 'alternative processes' box as I'm teaching a class how to do some alternative printing techniques over the coming couple of months. Find some unexposed cyanotype coated paper and before you know it, I'm outside taking advantage of another hot sunny, summer's day here in Perth. So, here is one of the results. Original image shot on 5x4 Ilford fp-4 film and printed using 'Art Spectrum' 210gsm, 'Draw & Wash' water colour paper, then tea toned in a bath of Liptons 'Black' tea.

The exhibition features 134 works by 96 artists and presents three of the most
fundamental artistic genres which link and transcend the ‘isms’ of
twentieth century art, from Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and beyond
to the art of today. This selection of iconic works is a visually
stunning array of outstanding works by Bacon, Cézanne, Kahlo, Klimt,
Picasso, Richter, Wesselmann, van Gogh and more. Many of the most
important artists of the 20th century are represented, with works that
reinvented Landscape, Still Life and Portraiture in their time. It's definitely worth a visit.

I’ve just returned
from Thailand after being invited to participate in a project organised by the
Office of Contemporary Art & Culture for the Thai Ministry of Culture.

The project, called
“The International Photographer & Writer, Thailand” was initiated in
response to a statement made by Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, related to
promoting tourism to the Chonburi and Krabi provinces. Five writers, ten Thai
photographers and seven foreign photographers were selected to participate in
the project, which ran from 28th of June until 5th of
July. Our brief was to explore and photograph Chonburi and Krabi provinces,
with the outcome being a book and exhibition that will be shown at the
new Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Centre later this year.

Over the eight day
period I roamed across Chonburi and Krabi provinces covering subjects ranging
from nightlife along Pattaya’s infamous Walking Street and the artisans working
on the very impressive Sanctuary of Truth to the ‘sea gypsy’ villages of Ko
Lanta and spending time with a group of fishermen on their boats and in their
‘fish farms’ out to sea.

On the second day of the project my fixer received a phone call that if we were
interested we could have an hour’s exclusive access to the dressing rooms of
the famous Tiffany’s Cabaret show that evening. Tiffany’s is Thailand’s most
famous transgender cabaret show which first started in 1974 and presents a spectacular sequin clad spectacle of over the top katoeys (transsexuals) lip-synching their
way around the stage. Getting behind the scenes access was an opportunity that
would probably never present itself to me again so I jumped at the chance.

Unfortunately our location and traffic congestion meant that by the time we
arrived at Tiffany’s I had less than half an hour to shoot before the show
started. Not much time to think about things and no time to grab anything more
than candids as the ‘girls’ were all in the final stages of their prep before
heading out onto the stage. After about twenty minutes, my time was up and the
dressing room emptied as the curtain went up. I would have liked to get back to
Tiffany’s and shoot some more to round out the story, but unfortunately the
pace of the project didn’t allow for that to happen. Maybe one day…

After achieving quite satisfactory results with the old glass-plate negatives that I mentioned in my previous post I started to look for more unwanted negs from Indochina from the French Colonial period. I returned to Vietnam in January revisiting some locations that I had not been to since 1997 but unfortunately did not find any old negatives along the way. But, just before I left on the trip I found some more on eBay and they were waiting for me on my return. Amongst those that I bought was this 6 x 13cm glass-plate negative of an old war veteran.

The seller, who lives in France, said that they belonged to his great grandfather who served with the Colonial troops in Africa and French Indochina but did not have much more information than that, although based on the clothing worn by the women in some of the portraits I deduced that they were from Tonkin (Northern Vietnam), most likely the North West and possibly even from Laos.

My hunch was confirmed when I produced a Cyanotype from the veteran's negative as I was able to identify the medal on his breast. It is one that I have in my collection, which I found in an antique shop in Vientiene in the early 2000's. He is wearing the Lao Order of the Million Elephants and the White Parasol which was originally instituted in 1909 for "civil and military merit in the development of the Kingdom and for devotion to the Kingdom (of Laos)." There are several classes of this award and the subject is wearing the Knight division, which is one of the lower orders and was most likely awarded to this individual after ten years service in the military. I don't know much more about the subject of this photograph, but am hoping that the vendor who sold me the negatives can tell me a bit more about his great grandfather and I can start to add more pieces of information to the puzzle.

About a month ago whilst scouring eBay for bits and pieces for my other interest, military badges relating to the French colonies in Indochina, I stumbled across these old glass-plate negatives taken in Tonkin (North Vietnam) towards the end of the 19th Century. ... And as old/alternative processes are my thing, it was just something that I just had to have, the plan being to produce some prints and muck around with hand coloring.

It’s no secret that the marketplace for professional photographers has
undergone a massive change over the past decade. The affordability of good
quality equipment and opportunities provided by the web has been a double-edged
sword for the pro shooter. It’s never been easier to get your work out there,
but in a world saturated with images, a lot harder to make your images stand
out from the crowd. Having the gear and knowing how to use it is only part of
the equation, being able to create multiple meaningful images that stand out from the
visual pap and linger in memory of the audience is a bit more difficult. Creating visually compelling photographs is important, creating a body of work that has structure, narrative and successfully compete for the audience's attention, more so.

Most professional
photographers know this and many have diversified their product range to
include workshops or training packages to cater for a growing market of
amateurs or semi-professionals who want to take their picture making to the
next level. Over the years I have had a lot of experience with photographers
workshops, from the perspective of participant, organiser and also presenter.
If there is one thing that I have learnt from that experience it is that being
a good photographer does not equate to being a good educator. These days, the
bulk of my income is derived from providing training to aspiring professional
photographers, and trust me, being a good photographic educator demands very
different skill-sets to being a good shooter.
So, I became very
excited when two friends of mine told me that they are developing a visual story-telling
workshop that will be delivered here in Perth. Not only are David Dare Parker
and Martine Perret internationally recognised photographers, but based on my
own observations whilst working alongside them delivering photographic
training, they also know how to teach. It's an extremely important point to consider when looking for a training provider. Despite their reputations, ego has not
got the better of them and maybe (probably) because of the work that they are
both renowned for, I found them both to be patient, empathetic tutors who are
able to break down information into easily understood building blocks,
providing their students with a solid foundation of real knowledge, not just
the feel good factor. These guys know how to inspire, entertain, but most importantly, inform.

Choosing the right travel partner can have
a major impact on one’s ‘holiday snaps’. The godfather of candid and
street-photography style, Henri Cartier-Bresson was a hunter before he took up
photography. His ‘decisive moments’ were not captured purely through being in
the right place at the right time. His skill was to see the potential in a
subject and then like a hunter laying in wait, strike when all the elements
were lined up to ensure success. That instant in time when the shop keeper in a
crowded local wet market looks up from arranging their produce and into your lens
often makes all the difference. It may only take a minute or so to capture that
instant, but your travel companions can quickly tire of constantly having to
wait whilst you work your scene, looking for the right composition and all the
elements to fall into place for that memorable shot. Insisting that you rise
before dawn to get to a location when the light is ‘right’ or before all the
other tourists arrive is often another source of tension. Many of us don’t have
the luxury of choosing who will accompany us on holidays and do the best they
can, but finding those kindred spirits can really make a difference. I’m
fortunate in being surrounded by an assortment of eccentrics, degenerates, drunks
and perverts who share my interests and tolerate my sometimes, odd
proclivities.
Half a century of American embargos had
left Cuba trapped in a time warp… crumbling Spanish colonial and 20th
century Art Deco architecture lined streets filled with Batista era American
gas guzzlers. A photographer’s paradise but the embargo also had it’s human cost
and the life of the average Cuban was and continues to be a struggle. One of the locals I met was
senor Benito who, along with about half a dozen Cuban photographers was taking
souvenir snaps for the, mainly European, tourists visiting the Capitolio
building in Havana. In 2002 digital photography was far from widespread, but
for these guys it wasn’t only an abstract notion, it was but an impossible
dream.

Benito’s predicament was simple, in order
to earn a living he had to provide the tourists with a product that they could
walk away with and the embargo meant that even accessing (the then still available) Polaroid film was
impossible. So the solution was to build a camera and darkroom in one… A light
tight box ,large enough to hold his B&W photographic paper, two small trays
to contain developer and fixer as well as a lens and film plane... the "Cuban Polaroid". The video of
the Afghan photographers, at the bottom of the page, shows the same set up in more
detail.

To take my portrait, he made me sit on the
steps, checked focus and then took the first frame by calculating the exposure
time in his head then manually removing and replacing the lens cap. Benito then
placed his hands into the box, developed and fixed it in camera, before
removing the resulting paper negative for a (very) quick wash, in a bucket below, to remove the
excess fixer. He then flipped the L shaped arm that was under the camera so
that it would provide a base for the negative, strategically placed the
‘Habana Cuba’ text and an image of the top of the building on the neg, took another photograph and went through the process again.
Voila a B&W souvenir of Havana… for the total cost of US$2. It was
fascinating to watch and hear Benito talk about the difficulties that he faces
in a country where finding even basic necessities can be difficult. Developer
and fixer came from a friend who worked at the hospital and for photographic paper,
he relied on the good will of friends and returning travelers to bring some
back from overseas… and making it through customs without it being deliberately
exposed by vindictive or over zealous immigration officials… a regular
occurrence, he told me.

When I look at my Cuban pictures, I often wonder
how Senor Benito is going these days. The photos that he and his colleagues
made were unique and like Cuba itself, harked back to a bygone era. But the
process that he employed was used out of necessity, not choice. For him and his
colleagues they had no alternatives. A decade has passed and these days every
tourist visiting Havana is likely to have a digital camera. Is he still hanging
around the steps of the Capitolio producing these unique souvenirs or has he
somehow managed to move into the 21st century? Maybe Cim Sears who
is going on Jack Picone and Steve Dupont’s photographer’s workshop to Cuba
later this year will be able to let me know when she returns? I daresay that if Benito and his
colleagues are still there, Steve who produced a beautiful series of Polaroid
street portraits in Afghanistan, will hear stories that mirror those of the

ONO has become an opportunity to see and acquire work from a range of established and emerging image makers at sometimes bargain basement prices. This years ONO includes renowned photographers, Eva Fernandez, Bronek Kozka and Christian Fletcher amongst a crowd of acclaimed and award winning image makers. The gallery, located on the corner of Aberdeen and Beaufort streets in Northbridge is packed to capacity with photos covering all genres and from a very diverse range of image makers. The exhibition opens tomorrow, Tuesday 26th and runs for only a few days so don't let this opportunity pass you by. If you want to attend the auction night, drop into the gallery and speak to one of the guys there, they can fill you in on all the details.

I seem to be buying a lot of photography books lately. After flicking through Patrick Zachmann's book W. or the Eye of the Long-Nose at the ECU library last week, I just had to have it. The week before it was another Magnum photographer, Trent Parke's, Bedknobs and Broomsticks that took my fancy and resulted in an exhaustive search which finally turned up a signed copy, which should arrive any day now... I hope.

Anyway, with some exceptions, I'm not generally a big fan of Annie Leibovitz's photos... Nothing wrong with them, no one can deny that they're superbly crafted and extremely beautiful... but much of the content just doesn't interest me. IMO, they're pictures that pay homage to a morally bankrupt and vacuous world...And they don't make me 'think' or offer any new insight. But after reading this review of her latest book, Pilgrimage by Gaby Wood in the Age, maybe I'll head over to Boffins bookshop and flick through the pages... and maybe even buy it.

"In many ways, Pilgrimage is a sequel to the book composed in mourning. After a high-profile bankruptcy, Leibovitz chose to photograph places associated with figures who had meant something to her, or who had at least influenced others

...That word ''abandoned'' is critical, since - although many of the images that made it to the book are carefully composed - the sense that she is capturing things because she sees them right now guides the entire project. Gone are the dozens of assistants and wind machines and props. Leibovitz is mostly alone, trying to summon the past as the light disappears.

So she photographs the detail in Dickinson's sole surviving dress; the books on Sigmund Freud's shelf; a pigeon skeleton labelled by Darwin; Georgia O'Keeffe's box of pastels; Virginia Woolf's desk, covered in stains and scratches. She records the paths her subjects walked each day, the view from a study window, a living room by candlelight, the blue tinge of a bedroom at dawn. Leibovitz is adept at capturing the corners of things, as if documenting the process by which they catch your eye." - Gaby Wood.
Early last year I mentioned how I admired the work of David Levinthal one of my posts. I like the way he creates elaborate sets using toys and miniatures then, with careful consideration to space and lighting creates drama, tension and narrative. Often, as in his Modern Romance 1984 -86 series, the images have a certain voyeuristic quality and the viewer can easily forget that they're actually looking at models, not real people or events.

Like Levinthal, much of my work often has a certain voyeuristic quality, I like looking but don't always engage or interact with my subjects as much as I could. Travel forms a large part of my life and this disengaged state of mind is often compounded by language and cultural barriers. My travel photos are often a combination of voyeurism and nostalgia. I like history and and am fascinated by stories of exploration and discovery. For me, there is a romance to travel which doesn't often exist when I am actually 'on the road' and preoccupied with the minutiae of changing money, finding a bed for the night or a toilet in a hurry.

So, inspired by Levinthal and old travel postcards I set about creating a series of images for a series entitled Indochine. Using model figures, predominantly from a Hong Kong based company called King & Country and sets which I built out of cardboard, foam core and things I found in aquarium suppliers (the Bayon 'face' sculpture) or lying around the house I have constructed my own tale of exploration, discovery and conquest. It's loosely based on the French expansion into Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos) but really just me having fun and being a kid again.

Indochine - Cyanotype print

The series is not quite complete and has evolved somewhat since I first started. Initially all the images were produced as fiber-based, silver gelatin prints, hand coloured to resemble old post cards. But in the past few weeks, with one of my classes at college experimenting with alternative printing techniques, I decided to re work them and produce the series as Cyanotype prints. The Cyanotype process was invented by the British astronomer Sir John Herschel in 1842 and has remained largely unchanged since. It uses two iron compounds, ferric ammonium citrate (green) and potassium ferricyanide, which when combined becomes sensitive to UV light. The images you can see here use this original recipe, coated onto water colour paper and using the contact printing method exposed to bright sunlight to create the print. Once exposure (which takes around 15 minutes for the negative material I am using) is complete, running water removes the unexposed emulsion leaving a rich blue image... hence the term cyanotype. I'm not a huge fan of the blue print, so have partially bleached these with household grade ammonia and then toned the print in a strong solution of tea resulting in the duo tone look that you can see here.

Earning enough coin to put beer in the fridge often takes up so much time that many of my projects are very slow burning, taking years to complete. It would be great to have the money to create the conditions to make the projects a reality. But, finding sponsors and writing successful grant applications is an art all in itself... and one that I am yet to master, so this idea of crowdfunding has some appeal.

Crowdfunding, if you're not familiar with the concept, raises cash through collective online donations. You outline your project online via one of the crowdfunding websites, set a funding goal within a specific time-frame and appeal to friends, family, associates and the general public to see the benefits of your project and donate. The range and scope of the projects being funded on these sites is broad and not just limited to photography, but here are a couple that I think are worth supporting.

You can see some of the results of his work in "Black Market" at Mediastorm. Now he is raising funds via the Emphas.is site to fund "Trading to Extinction", a book documenting the illegal trade. A donation of as little as $60 will help him reach his $14900 goal AND secure you a copy of the book. Natalie, Amanda, Alanna and Amber are using the FotoFreo 2012 Fringe festival (now re-badged as the "Open Exhibition Programme") to exhibit their work.

Their goal is a mere $1000 with minimum donations as low as a dollar helping them to reach that target. They're just over $200 short of their target so let's hope that enough people take a look and see the benefit in supporting our emerging talent.

OK, so what else? Not much to report, had a great time working with the Timorese photographers in Dili last month. But as always seems to be the case, never enough time and as soon as we had finished I was back on the plane heading back to a Perth heatwave. Next trip will have to be a holiday where I can take some time out to explore the country methinks.

Makes it really hard to get work when all I want to say is, "Just leave me the fuck alone!"

But professional photography is not just about taking photographs, the business aspects are crucial in order to succeed... It's probably more important than having a talent for photography, after all let's face it, there are a lot of really average shooters who run very successful photography businesses. Developing your 'brand', finding clients and keeping them happy etc etc etc... that's what being a professional photographer is largely about. There's already been a shitload written about all this stuff and we've got very worthwhile associations like the AIPP and the ACMP to support and nurture professional and emerging professional photographers. So, I'll leave all that stuff for them and another time.

Like many photographers, when I graduated (and despite the best intentions of the lecturers at TAFE) I still had no idea about how to establish myself. And, if the truth be told, more than a decade later, I am still blundering my way through. One of the things that I have learnt though is the importance of reputation and branding as part of the whole business of self promotion. OK, so once again it's a case of not practicing what I preach... just look at the dogs breakfast that is my website, this blog and my facebook page... All over the place like a mad woman's shit... only thing that seems to be consistent is that I may well be insane, but trust me... developing a 'name' is important in this industry.

Awards and recognition for your work are definitely useful in developing that 'name' and extremely useful as part of the photographers marketing strategy. It's why some professional photographers cream their pants at the thought of doing well at the APPA's or the Walkley's and others get excited by significant competitions such as the Head On and Moran prizes. Professional and peer recognition can attract clients and create opportunities in all sorts of ways.

That's not to say you should enter every competition under the sun, it's important to understand who you are pitching at and where you want to go. And of course, there are too many competitions that are just a thinly veiled attempt by the organisers to obtain / develop an image library without having to pay for the images... and at the same time appear to be engaging in some sort of 'community' interaction. The key is to read the Terms & Conditions, particularly regarding copyright, the rights being licensed by entering and what they can or will do with your pix. The ACMP put out a really good set of competition guidelines which you should refer to when considering entering any competition.

Ok, so what's the point of all this ramble? Yaffa Publishing who put out Capture magazine, the only really worthwhile Australian photography magazine for professionals IMO, are taking entries for their Australia's Top Emerging Photographers Awards 2012.

Entry is free and entrants must be aged 35 years or less at January 1, 2012, and have less than four years experience working as a professional photographer. From their blurb "The awards aim to encourage and identify up and coming image-makers and promote them in the early stages of their photographic careers.

• ADVERTISING
• ARCHITECTURE
• EDITORIAL & FASHION
• LANDSCAPE
• DOCUMENTARY & PHOTOJOURNALISM
• PORTRAIT
• SPORT
• WEDDING

There are eight categories in the program. Entries will be assessed by staff of the photographic magazines at Yaffa Publishing, who will develop shortlists for judging. These will be judged by a panel of leading professional photographers who will select a winner in each category, plus an overall winner who will be named Australia's Top Emerging Photographer 2012."

Eligible and interested? Go to http://www.australianphotography.com/emerging for more information and to download the application form.

For an emerging photographer, it's definitely something worth entering.

Paul Ciccetti was one of my students this past year and his work was innovative, interesting and exceptionally well produced. I always looked forward to seeing what he was producing in the darkroom and it isn't often that student images generate discussion amongst the staff as to whether they should be presented to the class. He definitely pushed a few buttons with some of his pix, but the strength of his work could not be denied and Paul was awarded the 'Cert IV Photoimaging Student of the Year' by Central Institute of Technology for 2011...and deservedly so.

Here is a short piece that I made as I tried to interpret what was happening around me during the trip that photographer, Daniel Grant and I made to Myanmar / Burma in July 2011.

It was a little surreal …sitting in a Rangoon hotel room watching opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi deliver her secretly recorded and smuggled Reith Lectures on the BBC. Yet, downstairs in the lobby and on the streets things appeared much the same as they have for decades. Despite being South East Asia's most resource rich country you couldn't tell looking around... the profits from the massive investment that is occurring must be either going back to China or straight into the pockets of the generals... visually it's like stepping into a time-warp.

Myanmar’s generals may have swopped their uniforms for suits during the elections of 2010. But have they really changed their attitude? Things such as emails, the internet and cell phones are engineered and priced to make it very difficult for the ordinary Burmese to gain access to these technologies. Control of the media still enforced... and be careful who you talk to if you want to discuss politics. Is Burma still trapped in the land of George Orwell or is this a new beginning? Recent events may indicate that change is happening... time will tell.

Welcome to the… Burmese Daze
Juleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12764989287450259734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8156543312629293871.post-15573199089180670442012-01-03T07:10:00.008+08:002012-01-03T08:26:46.648+08:00Out there

You say. Jules promoting crass Christmas consumerism? Nah... you know what I think... Nothing but a slick marketing ploy celebrating a fairy tale that makes us feel guilty unless we buy shit that won't be appreciated for people we may not even like.

But now that I have your attention...

There are a couple of books that I think no serious amateur or professional photographer in Australia should be without and if you're thinking of gift ideas for yourself or others consider these.

The Better Business Bible 2.0 is published by the Australian Commercial and Media Photographers (ACMP) which represents Australian professional photographers working in the commercial and editorial sectors. Less well known that the AIPP, who (in Western Australia anyway) appear to be more focused on the wedding and 'domestic' photography market sector, the ACMP is committed to developing and promoting best business practice for commercial photographers.

This second edition of the Better Business Bible was released in late 2010 and includes invaluable Australian focused content relating to copyright, quoting & negotiating with clients, licensing, model & property releases, digital guidelines, marketing for photographers and much more. If you're a professional or even a serious amateur who does the occasional photography job then you need this book! It may not look very glamorous and there's not a single photograph to be seen, but the $75 (or free for ACMP members and $55 for students or assistants) is a very worthwhile investment. The book is only available from the ACMP website www.acmp.com.au

Photographers: Copyright & Moral Rights (B120v01e) produced by the Australian Copyright Council and costing a mere Au$30. I've just checked the Copyright Council website and it looks like this is now only available as a downloadable e-book in pdf format, which is why it is now only $30 I guess, but trust me, this is an invaluable addition to your reference library.

There are a lot of myths and assumptions about image copyright both on the part of photographers and clients. Some of it is wishful thinking, some confusing foreign Intellectual Property laws with the legal situation here in Australia. This booklet clears up the confusion, it provides an overview of Australian copyright law, how it applies to photographs and photographers, legislated exceptions, how to protect yourself and deal with infringements, the Moral Rights suite of legislation, contracts etc. Thirty bucks that can save you a shitload of cash and potential heartache in the future. Back then I found it difficult to find out what was happening on any given night and was generally 'underwhelmed' and to a degree, frustrated, by the whole experience. Not any more, like the town of Siem Reap which has changed dramatically over recent years... mainly to cope with the increasing numbers of tourists eager to scramble over the ruins of nearby Angkor, the festival has grown and become a lot more vibrant and user friendly for visitors. But, to be truthful they are assisted by a small but dedicated team of consultants and co-ordinators, including Yumi Goto and Sohrab Hura... whom it was great to see again this year and I am extremely pleased to hear that he will be back in Perth again next year for FotoFreo 2012.

There seems to be a real sense of community at the festival in Siem Reap and it was great walking into a venue and see familiar faces beaming in recognition through the crowd. Caught up with another Indian colleague, albeit all to briefly, Kapil Das aka lenskap of blindboys.org fame... and once you've looked at that link, check out this video of one of their 'blowups' in Bombay.

Blowup exhibition at last year's Angkor Photo Festival

I guess, the blowups in Angkor are the festival's equivalent of a fringe, with work coming from around the world and being pasted onto various walls around town. Maps are handed out during the projections at the FCC showing the locations of the images and it's a really cool way of seeing work by a range of photographers... and for many people, a way to acquire images as part of the concept is that passers by, can take the pictures they like.

Here's hoping that with the strong Indian presence at FotoFreo next year, Kapil and Lyle are able to do something similar here in Western Australia... Mind you, it's only a couple of bucks to get around town in a motodop taxi so maybe Al was right and the leisurely strolls were unnecessary under the tropical sun... but fun nonetheless, with some good photo ops along the way.

And in the evenings as the sun set we downed our Angkor beers and meandered along to the exhibition launch for that day, followed by more beers under the stars at the FCC (where I exhibited back in 2006) we'd check out the projections for that night. Then it'd would be a slow meander back down to one of the restaurants or cafes around Pub street where we'd dissect the shows and shoot the shit, before almost inevitably heading back to X Bar for several last drinks before bed.
Photographers, Alistair Edwards and Theron Kirkman had made it as far as Sukhumvit Road. So, Simon Santi, who had escaped from the clutches of the West Australian and I decided that we'd better join them for purely professional reasons... of course. We did have some time up our sleeve before the festival launch and RV with the others. Much beer and merriment before we fled Bangkok 24 hours later... but those pix will have to wait for another time.
